More about Tabriz Rugs

Tabriz in north-west Persia has one of the country’s oldest knotting traditions; the city was long a hub of the caravan routes. Typical features are a short, densely knotted pile and precise floral patterns around a central medallion, often in the Mahi pattern. Fineness is given in Raj. With us you’ll find Tabriz rugs from runners up to 300 × 400 cm.

What does Raj mean for Tabriz rugs?

Raj is the measure of a Tabriz rug’s fineness: the higher the value, the denser the knotting and the crisper the lines. In our selection you’ll find 40, 50 and 60 Raj; according to our product data, most pieces have 450,000 to 550,000 knots per square metre, with a pile of around 6 mm. Some have silk knotted in, which gives the pile a sheen.

What is the Mahi pattern?

Mahi means fish in Persian. It refers to small fish-shaped motifs that run finely across the field, often around a medallion. There are also Tabriz rugs with pictorial motifs, round pieces and, with Tabriz Graphic, modern designs. Many of our Tabriz rugs are 20 to 50 years old, some antique. Slight nuances of colour in the pile, the Abrash, are a mark of quality. More about the city in our guide Tabriz: The Centre of Persian Weaving.

Large sizes such as 250 × 350 cm fit under a dining table if all the chairs stand fully on the rug when you sit down. Tip: with ‘View in your room’ on the product page, you can use your smartphone to place any Tabriz in your room at full size.
