Label STEP
Label STEP is a non-profit fair trade organisation dedicated to the welfare of weavers and workers in the handmade rug industry. Founded in Switzerland in 1995, the Label STEP standard, with its proven and comprehensive fair trade requirements, encompasses general human rights, including the prohibition of child labour, safe working conditions, fair wages, and sustainable, environmentally friendly production. To address the complexities of the handmade rug industry, a solution-oriented approach is pursued that tackles problems at their root. STEP advises and supports rug weavers and producers in understanding and adhering to the STEP standard. Through its country representatives and programmes, and with the financial support of its certified fair trade partners and donors, the humanitarian organisation actively advocates for workplace improvements and empowers weavers with educational programmes covering topics such as health, safety, and financial literacy.
These combined efforts aim to improve people's lives, preserve centuries-old artisanal skills, and ensure that the handmade rug industry remains sustainable in the future. STEP is the only non-governmental organisation of its kind operating in all major countries where handmade rugs are produced and where fair trade initiatives and safeguards are most needed. Certified STEP Fair Trade Partners include handmade rug dealers who support STEP's efforts by paying royalties and committing to independent audits of their entire supply chain. Only certified STEP Fair Trade Partners are permitted to promote and sell fair trade rugs bearing the STEP Fair Trade Seal.
