More about Nain Rugs

Nain lies on the edge of the central Persian desert and was long known for fine woollen fabrics before rug knotting began there around a hundred years ago. Nain rugs feature floral patterns in cream, white and blue and are graded by fineness into 6La, 9La and 12La. Here you’ll find them from 40 × 60 cm up to large sizes.

What do 6La, 9La and 12La mean?

The La rating describes the fineness of the warp: the smaller the number, the more finely the rug is knotted. According to our product data, a Nain 12La has 250,000 to 360,000 knots per square metre, a 9La 360,000 to 490,000 and a 6La 490,000 to 750,000. More knots mean crisper lines and a shorter pile, around 6 mm for a 6La and around 10 mm for a 12La. The fineness of each piece is listed in the product details.

How do you recognise a Nain?

Typical features are a light palette of cream, white and blue, a central medallion with fine tendrils and delicately drawn outlines; strong red or green is rare. Our Nain rugs are knotted from pure new wool on a cotton warp. Slight nuances of colour in the pile, the Abrash, are a mark of quality. A light Nain brings calm to a room with bold furniture. Our guide Nain: Persian City Rugs with Silk Outlines tells the story of the city.
