Kardal too is one of the villages around Hamadan in western Persia, that densely woven landscape where almost every place keeps its own rug language. The weavers here take their motifs from what surrounds them: playful floral and geometric patterns, grown out of daily life and passed on across generations. Each village sets its own accents in form and colour, and a Kardal carries its origin with noticeable self-assurance. The work is done with hand-spun wool on a robust foundation: material made for everyday use, which only gains in character over the years. The abrash, the fine wandering of the tones, is no accident here but the honest sign of genuine handwork. A Kardal is down-to-earth weaving that does not need to be loud in order to move you.
