Ghoum rugs come from the city of Ghom in central Persia, south of Tehran. The city is known far beyond Persia for its silk rugs. Many Ghoum are knotted wholly or partly in silk, which allows particularly fine patterns and a soft sheen. Unlike in many knotting regions, the rug tradition in Ghom is young: it only emerged in the 20th century; the workshops took up motifs from all over Persia instead of cultivating a tribal pattern of their own. The motifs are predominantly floral; alongside medallions there are also artfully knotted hunting and garden scenes that trace paradise gardens with watercourses and animals. Ghoum are among the most finely worked Persian rugs: wool qualities are densely knotted, silk qualities reach markedly finer knot densities. Whether your Ghoum is wool or silk, you can see in the product details.

This rug measures 299 × 197 cm and works well in a living room, dining room or bedroom. It comes in blue and features a central medallion; the border is blue too. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% silk and a foundation of 100% silk. Rugs of this quality typically have 750,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

In the living room, a blue rug brings sofa and armchairs together into an island; cognac, leather and warm wood make a lovely counterpoint.
