The Tekke comes from the Tekke Turkmen, a nomadic tribe from the steppes of Central Asia, and is one of the defining traditions of Turkmen rug art. For generations the women of the tribe knotted their rugs on simple hand looms, for instance as floor coverings in the tent. Their hallmark is a strictly geometric order: the ever-recurring octagonal Gül, the tribal medallion, which runs in clear rows across the deep red ground and gives the Tekke its own rhythm. This colour world of rich red, blue and golden tones has grown over centuries. Where hand-spun wool is used, the Tekke often shows Abrash, the lively shimmer of tones that springs from handwork and open dyeing. Within it lies a piece of Central Asia and a centuries-old craft that has been carried forward.

This rug measures 93 × 71 cm and works well in a hallway, kitchen or entrance area. It comes in red and features an all-over pattern; the border is red too. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 360,000 to 490,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

A red rug makes the hallway warm and inviting; leave a hand's width of floor free at the sides so it can breathe.

With the AR Visualizer, you can place this rug in your room to scale before you order and see how it looks.
