Bidjar rugs come from the town of the same name in western Persia, a Kurdish-influenced region with a long weaving tradition. Zandjan lies to the east of it on an old trade route along which wool, dyes and patterns have always travelled. The knotters there work in the same tradition, firm in construction and clear in drawing. The Bidjar tradition is known above all for its robustness: the weft is beaten down hard during knotting, making the weave dense and heavy. That makes these rugs hard-wearing and long-lasting; a Zandjan is a rug to be used, not spared. Their patterns are mostly clearly structured, often with a medallion or an all-over tendril design in strong reds, blues and beiges. Where hand-spun wool is used, it brings fine nuances of colour (Abrash) that give the piece its own depth.

This rug measures 173 × 113 cm and works well in a bedroom, hallway or kitchen. It comes in red and features a central medallion; the border is beige. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 250,000 to 360,000 knots per square metre.

A red rug makes the bedroom feel cosy; bed linen in cream or sand lets its colour settle calmly.
