Kashan in central Persia is one of the oldest and most important centres of Persian rug art. Long before the town became known for its rugs, it was a trading place for silk, and this heritage still lives in its knotting tradition today. The town's rugs are finely knotted and carry a rich pattern language: delicate floral arrangements, layered medallions with corner spandrels and filigree borders, inspired by centuries of Persian craft tradition. Some Kashan rugs are made of fine silk, which gives the patterns a soft sheen and the lines particular clarity; most are made of densely knotted wool, which lends the drawing more calm and depth. You'll find which fibre your Kashan has in the product details. Every rug is made by hand, knot by knot, often over many months.

This rug measures 432 × 315 cm. It comes in red and blue and features an all-over pattern; the border is blue. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 360,000 to 490,000 knots per square metre. It is between 50 and 100 years old.

A red rug warms any room; with pale walls and dark wood it becomes the calm anchor of the interior.
