The Gabbeh comes from the tents and villages of the Persian nomads, where weavers once knotted their rugs to sleep on, dense and high-piled to give warmth on cold nights. The story here is told not with fine drawing but with clarity: stylised goats, camels, dogs, a few plants, sometimes people. It is the life of the weaving family, just as they saw it in front of them. The wool is spun by hand and rich in lanolin, and it gives the Gabbeh its grainy, lively surface. Natural tones such as cream, brown and grey meet strong red, yellow, green and blue from plant dyes. That the colour shifts a little from row to row is part of the picture. This so-called Abrash is the trace of the hand-spun wool and makes every Gabbeh an honest piece of nomadic craft.
