Turkman rugs come from the Turkic-speaking Turkmen, who are at home in north-eastern Persia, on the Turkmen steppe and in northern Khorasan. The people are divided into many tribes, and each traditionally carries its own emblem in the rug: the gul, a stylised, often octagonal medallion that repeats across the field like a family coat of arms. Read the gul and you can tell which tribe knotted the rug. Over everything lies the deep red, verging almost on brown, that defines the Turkman and gives it its warm, serious calm. Where hand-spun wool is used, the colour breathes; this fine irregularity, Abrash, is part of the nomadic signature. A Turkman carries the order and memory of an entire people in its pattern.

This rug measures 35 × 90 cm. It comes in red and features a central medallion; the border is multicoloured. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 250,000 to 360,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

A red rug warms any room; with pale walls and dark wood it becomes the calm anchor of the interior.

With the AR Visualizer, you can place this rug in your room to scale before you order and see how it looks.
