Sarough is an important village for the art of rug weaving. The village is located north of the city of Arak and was founded in 1808 under the name Sultanabad. The name was changed in 1930. The rugs from this area are known for their extremely high quality and dense high flor. Ancient models of the Sarough are highly valued by many collectors and rug lovers. Some Saroughs have a "mahi" pattern, short for "mahi-to-hos", which means "fish in the pond". This pattern is also referred to as "Herati" pattern because it was created around the 16th century in Herat.
