A handmade rug is created without machines, knot by knot or thread by thread, from materials such as virgin wool, cotton or silk. Cared for well, it will stay with you for decades.
Rugtales is a family business from Hamburg; our family has traded handmade rugs since 1952 and is now in its sixth generation. Every piece here is one of a kind.
🏅 Label STEP Partner
A standard for fair trade in handmade rugs: fair wages, health protection and occupational safety, against child labour.
🤝 CARE & FAIR
Education and health projects for weaving communities.
Hand-knotted rugs are robust and durable if you follow a few simple guidelines.
🧹 Vacuuming without a brush head, in the direction of the pile. Not across the fringes.
💧 Spills should be dabbed immediately with a damp cloth, never rubbed.
🚫 Do not use chemicals or harsh cleaners. Professional cleaning is recommended for stubborn stains.
☀️ Avoid direct sunlight to slow down the fading of natural colours.
📦 Storage should always be rolled, never folded. Store in a dry and ventilated place.

Questions & Answers
Hand-woven kilims have small irregularities in the weave, slight colour variations and no backing at all; the pattern is visible on both sides. These features show you the handwork.
Gashgai Kelim are woven by the Gashgai tribes in the Fars region. They are known for bold geometric patterns, robust wool fibres, and long-lasting natural colours. They are among the most sought-after Persian flatweave rugs.
Yes. Thanks to their dense flat weave, Persian kilims are very hard-wearing, ideal for living rooms, hallways, kitchens and busy areas.
Most Kelim are made from 100% wool or a wool-cotton blend. Virgin wool, particularly due to the lanolin – the natural fat surrounding the wool fibre – makes the rug robust, naturally dirt-repellent, and easy to care for.
Kilims dyed with natural dyes age beautifully. Constant direct sunlight can fade the colours slightly; turning the kilim now and then protects them.
Regular vacuuming is sufficient for everyday use. For stains, cold water and mild soap help. For deep cleaning, a professional cleaner experienced with handmade and Persian rugs should be consulted.
Yes. Wool flat weaves such as Persian kilims and Kelim Gashgai work well with underfloor heating, ideally with a good rug underlay.
Each hand-woven Kelim is crafted on a traditional loom. Small differences in size, alignment, or pattern are normal and are part of their charm and authenticity.
Yes. The flatweave makes Kelim easier to clean and more resistant to pet hair and dirt than rugs with a high pile.
The price depends on craftsmanship, origin (e.g. the Gashgai tribe), age, the complexity of the pattern and the weaving technique. Older kilims, or kilims from nomadic tribes who rarely weave today, often have a higher value.
