Shiraz, the capital of the southern Persian region of Fars, has always been a gathering point for the rugs of the nomads, the Gashgai and Khamseh, many of whom have long since settled in the area. Yet knotting carries on as it always has: with the handed-down techniques, patterns and colours of the tribes. A Shiraz rug often shows a central hexagon set with hooks, surrounded by smaller traditional motifs scattered across the field: signs from the everyday life and surroundings of the weavers. Warm reds, brown, dark blue and black make up the familiar palette. In hand-spun wool the colour likes to wander a little: Abrash, that natural tone-on-tone shift, is no flaw here but the hallmark of genuine nomadic knotting from southern Persia.

This rug measures 268 × 169 cm and works well in a living room, dining room or bedroom. It comes in red and features a central medallion; the border is beige. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% virgin wool. Rugs of this quality typically have 160,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

In the living room, a red rug becomes a warm island that anchors the seating; the coffee table stands fully on it and the sofa sits flush.

With the AR Visualizer, you can place this rug in your room to scale before you order and see how it looks.
