Senneh is the old name for Sanandaj, a town in the Kurdish highlands of Persia. The rugs made there and in the surrounding villages, by nomads as much as by farming families, still carry that name today. The defining motif is the all-over Mahi pattern, those finely ranked fish forms that usually order themselves around a generous central field. A Senneh rug stands for the Kurdish knotting tradition: robustly made, clearly drawn and built to last. The hand-spun wool often shows Abrash, the quiet play of colour tones that gives every piece the signature of its region. When you have a Senneh in front of you, you are looking at a craft the people of this mountain landscape have carried on for generations, a design that gets by without fashions.
