Sarough is an important weaving village north of the town of Arak in Persia, founded in 1808 under the name Sultanabad. Rugs from the region are known for their dense, high pile and their careful finishing; it is exactly this firm construction that lets them stand up to busy rooms for decades. Antique Sarough rugs are especially valued by collectors. Many carry the Mahi pattern, short for "Mahi-To-Hos" ("fish in the pond"), also called the Herati pattern, as it appeared in Herat in the 16th century. Small fish-shaped leaves frame a rosette in it, an image of water in the garden that has been passed from one weaver to the next for generations. The hand-spun wool brings subtle shifts of colour with it (Abrash), and they give the dense pile its depth.
