Around the city of Hamadan in western Persia lies one of the most productive knotting landscapes of the region: village after village, each with its own signature. Assadabad is one of these places, and as in the neighbouring villages such as Tarom, the rugs speak of the everyday life of the people who knot them: strong colours and playful motifs, sometimes floral, sometimes geometric, each in the language of colour and form that a village has developed for itself over generations. An Assadabad is therefore less the work of a workshop than the expression of a village tradition: direct, lively, knotted from memory. Because the wool is spun by hand, the colour never comes out entirely even: Abrash, the fine variations in shade across the pile that make every village rug an honest piece of handwork.
