Tabriz rugs come from the city of the same name in north-western Persia, an Azerbaijani-influenced region with one of the oldest weaving traditions in the country. The city was long a junction of the caravan routes, and its workshops were among the most influential in Persian rug making. Characteristic is a short, densely knotted pile and a precise, mostly floral pattern around a central medallion. Many Tabriz rugs carry the well-known Mahi pattern: Mahi is Persian for fish and describes the small, fish-shaped motifs that run finely across the surface. The fineness of a Tabriz is given in Raj: the higher the value, the denser the knotting and the clearer the delicate lines. That precision is built knot by knot on the upright loom; a single rug can occupy weavers for many months.

This runner measures 197 × 65 cm and works well in a hallway or kitchen. It comes in blue and black and features an all-over pattern; the border is beige. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 450,000 to 550,000 knots per square metre.

A blue runner draws a calm line through the hallway; with space to the walls it feels generous rather than cramped.
