Sarough is a weaving village north of the city of Arak in Persia, formerly called Sultanabad. The rugs of the region are known for their dense pile, their heavy, firm construction and their careful workmanship; it is precisely this firm construction that makes them rugs for well-trodden rooms. Antique Sarough are particularly prized by collectors. Typical are floral patterns, often composed around a central medallion. Where hand-spun wool has been used, it brings fine nuances of colour, the Abrash, which lends depth to the dense pile.

This rug measures 367 × 275 cm and works well in a living room, dining room or bedroom. It comes in beige and red and features a central medallion; the border is red. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 250,000 to 490,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

In the living room, a beige rug forms a light island that anchors the seating; the coffee table stands fully on it and the sofa sits flush.
