Hereke is a coastal town near Istanbul and, since the middle of the 19th century, an important centre of Turkish weaving. Hereke rugs were originally made in the imperial manufactory for the court of the Ottoman Empire and were given as gifts to state guests and palaces. To this day they are regarded as sought-after collector's pieces. They are knotted with the double Turkish knot, from fine silk or from a combination of wool and cotton. The Turkish knot wraps around two warp threads and holds the pile firmly, which produces clear contours even in very fine drawing. The patterns combine Turkish and Persian traditions: richly detailed blossoms, birds, prayer niches and the Tree of Life, which has stood for growth and connection in the region for centuries, carried by a harmonious palette of ivory, dark blue, red, yellow and green.

This rug measures 96 × 66 cm and works well in a hallway, kitchen or entrance area. It comes in turquoise and features a central medallion; the border is red. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% silk and a foundation of 100% silk. Rugs of this quality typically have 750,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

A turquoise rug makes the hallway fresh and cheerful; with white and pale wood the colour feels light.
