Moud rugs come from the town of Moud in eastern Persia, in the Khorasan region. They are known for their fine knotting on a cotton foundation, usually with a closely clipped wool pile; silk is occasionally worked in to lift the finest details. The short pile is no accident: it lets the small-scale drawing stand out sharply, just as the weavers of the region have kept it for generations. A light ground with rust and blue tones is typical, together with the recurring Mahi pattern: Mahi is Persian for fish and describes the small fish-shaped motifs that run finely across the surface. They are arranged around diamond shapes and slender leaf vines and repeat across the whole ground. That clear structure makes Moud rugs easy to combine in many settings.
