In the borderland between Persia and Afghanistan live the Belutch, various nomadic tribes of differing origins who make their living from farming, rug weaving and the breeding of sheep, goats and camels. Their rugs are closely related to Afghan and Turkmen weavings and carry a real sense of nomadic handwork. Typical features are wide borders, often made of goat hair, and a short wool pile in earthy tones: dark brown, rust, red, blue and black. Geometric all-over patterns run across the surface, along with stylised blossoms and the characteristic Gul, an octagonal tribal motif. Belutch rugs are mostly knotted in smaller formats, dense yet thin and flexible. Traditionally they often served as prayer rugs. Because the wool is hand-spun, abrash belongs to the nature of these rugs and brings their muted colours to life.
