Hereke is a coastal town near Istanbul and, since 1843, an important centre of Turkish weaving. Hereke rugs were originally made in the imperial manufactory for the court of the Ottoman Empire and given as gifts to visiting heads of state and to palaces. To this day they remain sought-after collectors' pieces. They are knotted with the double Turkish knot, from fine silk or from a combination of wool and cotton. The Turkish knot wraps around two warp threads and holds the pile firmly, which keeps the outlines crisp even in very fine drawing. The patterns bring Turkish and Persian traditions together: detailed blossoms, birds, prayer niches and the tree of life, which has stood in the region for centuries for growth and connection, all carried by a balanced palette of ivory, dark blue, red, yellow and green.
