Ardebil lies in the north of Persia, capital of the province of the same name, close to the Caucasus. And you can hear that closeness in the rug: Ardebil rugs are thinly knotted and carry a clear, geometric pattern closely related to Caucasian design. Their name also carries one of the finest stories in the rug world. One of the oldest surviving Persian rugs of all is an Ardebil, knotted in Kashan, once made for a great mosque and later sold to pay for its restoration. Today you can see it in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This combination of sober geometry and great provenance makes the character of the Ardebil. Where the wool is spun by hand, the colour shimmers with a slight shift: Abrash, the honest sign of real knotting work.
