Rugs from Tehran have been knotted by hand in the Persian capital for centuries and are known for their careful workmanship and artful design. As the capital, Tehran drew weavers and designers from across the country, and you can see exactly that in the rugs: their patterns bring together influences from many regions of Persia, floral compositions, medallions and fine scrollwork in a balanced palette. The cartoons were drawn by the workshops' own designers and transferred knot by knot, work that takes months. A Tehran rug therefore brings a piece of craft history into the room without pushing itself forward. The hand-spun wool carries subtle shifts of colour (Abrash) that give every piece its own character and become visible in the light.
