More about Gabbeh Rugs
A Gabbeh is a high-pile nomadic rug from southern Persia, knotted from hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool. Its patterns are deliberately pared back: an animal, a tree, calm fields of colour. Alongside it you’ll find the Rizbaf, its more finely knotted relative with crisper drawing. With a pile of 12 to 15 mm, both feel soft under bare feet and sit well in modern rooms.
Frequently asked questions about Gabbeh Rugs
Why are Gabbeh rugs so thick?
Gabbeh rugs originally served nomadic families as sleeping mats. For this, weavers knotted a high, dense pile of hand-spun wool; on our pieces it measures 12 to 15 mm.
Are Gabbeh rugs suitable for everyday use?
Yes. The lanolin-rich wool is naturally hard-wearing and dirt-repellent, and the firm knotting stands up to busy living rooms and bedrooms.
Does a new Gabbeh shed?
Loose fibres may come away at first. This quickly decreases with regular vacuuming and is not a quality defect.
How do I care for a Gabbeh?
Vacuum regularly without a beater brush and dab stains with cold water and mild soap. For a deep clean, choose a specialist for hand-knotted rugs.
Do the motifs have a meaning?
Many motifs such as goats, trees or geometric shapes tell of the daily life and natural surroundings of the weaver’s family. There is usually no fixed design; the weaver knots what she sees before her.
