More about Rugs for the Coat Area

Rugs for the entrance and coat area that can take plenty of wear and make your home feel welcoming right from the front door.

Which rug is right for your coat area?

In the coat area, a rug faces heavier wear than almost anywhere else: outdoor shoes, moisture, winter grit. Flat, dense pieces are therefore ideal. A Kelim has no pile to trap dirt and is easy to shake out. A short-pile, tightly knotted rug made of virgin wool stays naturally stain-resistant for a long time thanks to its lanolin content.

What size is right?

Measure the open space in front of your coat area and leave a hand’s breadth of space around it to the wall, or ideally two. The front door must swing freely over the rug; if door clearance is low, a flat-weave is the better choice. In narrow entrance areas, a runner creates a calmer feel than a small, square rug; you can also find suitable pieces under Hallway Rugs.

Care in the entrance area

A doormat outside catches the worst dirt. Vacuum your rug regularly without a rotating brush and rotate it occasionally so it wears evenly. An anti-slip underlay keeps it in place on tiles or parquet. To see how a piece looks in your entrance beforehand, use the AR Rug Visualizer: open the product page on your smartphone and tap "View in your room".

Frequently asked questions about Rugs for the Coat Area

Which rug is suitable for the coat area?
Flat, dense pieces like a Kelim or short-pile, tightly knotted rugs made of virgin wool. Both are hard-wearing, easy to clean, and rarely obstruct the door.
How much distance from the wall does the rug need?
At least a hand’s breadth, or ideally two. This makes the entrance feel more spacious, and the rug won't get squeezed beneath shoe racks or coat hooks.
Will a rug slip in the entrance area?
It can slip on tiles or parquet. An anti-slip underlay keeps it securely in place and also protects the weave.
