More about Isfahan Rugs

In the Safavid era, Isfahan was the capital and seat of the court, and its workshops made rugs for palaces and mosques. This closeness to architecture returns in the rugs: finely drawn tendrils, floral motifs and ornate medallions. Our Isfahan rugs are very densely knotted from pure new wool, some with silk, and mostly on a silk warp.

How do you recognise an Isfahan rug?

By its fineness: according to our product data, our Isfahan rugs have 750,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, and at around 6 mm the pile is very short. The warp is usually silk, which is why the fringes shimmer too. Typical features are a central medallion with scrollwork and a clear, symmetrical layout; some pieces are designed as pictorial rugs. Many of our Isfahan rugs are 20 to 50 years old, some considerably older. Small nuances of colour in the pile, the Abrash, are a mark of quality.

Where does an Isfahan look its best?

Where it is seen rather than walked on all day: in the living room in front of the sofa, in the bedroom or as a small piece in the entrance. Our guide Isfahan: Persian Rugs with a Palace History tells more of the story.

Tip: with ‘View in your room’ on the product page, you can use your smartphone to place any Isfahan in your room at full size.

Frequently asked questions about Isfahan Rugs

What is an Isfahan rug?
A hand-knotted city rug from Isfahan in central Persia, known for floral medallions, fine scrollwork and a very high knot density.
How can I recognise a genuine Isfahan?
By the very fine knotting (750,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre on our pieces), the short pile, a warp usually of silk and a back on which the pattern shows pin-sharp.
Is an Isfahan suitable for everyday use?
Yes, with a little consideration: it is better placed in a living room or bedroom than in a busy hallway. Vacuum gently and choose a specialist for a deep clean.
