More about Kelim & Sumak Rugs
A Kelim is a flatwoven rug without pile; the Sumak is its relative, with a dense surface that looks almost embroidered. Here you’ll find both from Persian nomadic and village regions, from the richly coloured Kelim Gashgai of Fars to the finely patterned Kelim Senneh. Light, durable and very flat at around 5 mm, they suit hallways, kitchens and the space under the dining table.
Frequently asked questions about Kelim & Sumak Rugs
Is a Kelim suitable for everyday use?
Yes. The dense flatweave of pure new wool is hard-wearing and suits living rooms, hallways, kitchens and busy areas. A non-slip underlay keeps it in place.
Can I put a Kelim on underfloor heating?
Yes. Wool flatweaves are suitable for underfloor heating, ideally with a suitable rug underlay.
How can I tell that a Kelim is handwoven?
By small irregularities in the weave, gentle colour variations (Abrash) and the fact that the pattern is visible on both sides, with no backing. On a Sumak, loose threads lie on the back.
How do I care for a Kelim?
Regular vacuuming without a beater brush is enough. Dab stains with cold water and mild soap; for a deep clean, turn to a specialist for handwoven rugs. Rotating it now and then protects the colours from one-sided sunlight.
Why do prices vary so much?
Origin, age, fineness of weave, richness of pattern and size determine the price. Older pieces from weaving traditions that are hardly active today are usually more valuable.
