The province of Ilam has its name from the ancient country Elam and is located on the border with Iraq. The city is mainly inhabited by Kurds while the surrounding area is inhabited by the Lori.

In order to create jobs, but also to revive the art of rug weaving after the Iraqi-Iranian war, the government promoted the establishment of knotting chairs in this area. The so -called Sherkate Sahimi Farsh, which established the art of rug weaving all over the country, supported the Knüpfer. For this reason, there are no antique rugs from Ilam.

The patterns of the Ilam rugs are inspired by various provenance in Iran and are strongly based on the style of the Isfahan and Sarough rugs.

However, the coloring is softer and brighter.
