Tabriz rugs come from the city of the same name in north-western Persia, an Azerbaijani-influenced region with one of the oldest weaving traditions in the country. The city was long a junction of the caravan routes, and its workshops were among the most influential in Persian rug making. Characteristic is a short, densely knotted pile and a precise, mostly floral pattern around a central medallion. Many Tabriz rugs carry the well-known Mahi pattern: Mahi is Persian for fish and describes the small, fish-shaped motifs that run finely across the surface. The fineness of a Tabriz is given in Raj: the higher the value, the denser the knotting and the clearer the delicate lines. That precision is built knot by knot on the upright loom; a single rug can occupy weavers for many months.

This rug measures 84 × 63 cm and works well in a hallway, kitchen or entrance area. It comes in beige and features a central medallion; the border is brown. It is hand-knotted, with a pile of 100% virgin wool and a foundation of 100% cotton. Rugs of this quality typically have 450,000 to 550,000 knots per square metre. It is between 20 and 50 years old.

In the hallway, a beige rug brightens the way; leave a hand's width of floor free all round so it has room to breathe.
