More about Vintage Rugs

Our vintage rugs begin their lives a second time. They are old, hand-knotted Persian rugs whose colour is stripped back before they are dyed anew, Heritage pieces with a muted, warm patina, and Konya rugs from Central Anatolia. Traces of their former life are part of them; they make each piece honest and personal and sit surprisingly well in modern rooms.

What is a vintage rug?

At Rugtales, vintage means that an old, hand-knotted rug is not preserved but given a new chapter. With our vintage pieces from Persia, the colour is stripped back, the pile is sheared in places, and the rug is then dyed anew in fresh, often surprising shades. A new image shines through beneath the old pattern. The Heritage rugs are old Persian pieces that gain their muted, warm patina through a traditional treatment with henna and walnut shells. Konya rugs from Central Anatolia carry the geometric visual language of their region.

Genuinely vintage or distressed look?

Many new rugs on the market only look old. Our vintage and Heritage rugs, by contrast, begin as genuine old Persian rugs; worn areas and gentle traces are part of their history, not a defect. The Abrash, the subtle play of colour in the pile, also remains visible and shows the handwork. You can read how to judge the age of a rug in our guides What Does Vintage Mean for Rugs? and Valuing Antique Rugs.

Is a vintage rug worth buying?

If you’re looking for a rug with character that feels modern and still has a history, yes. Vintage rugs suit Scandinavian, minimalist and rustic rooms alike. Many come in sizes around 200 × 300 cm, large enough for a seating area. Tip: with ‘View in your room’ on the product page, you can use your smartphone to place any vintage rug in your room at full size.

Frequently asked questions about Vintage Rugs

What is a vintage rug at Rugtales?
An old, hand-knotted Persian rug that is selected in Persia, has its colour stripped back, is partly sheared and then dyed anew. There are also Heritage pieces with a warm patina and Konya rugs from Central Anatolia.
Are vintage rugs hand-knotted?
Yes. Every piece began as a hand-knotted rug; the treatment changes the colour and surface, not the knotting.
Why do some pieces have worn areas?
Because they have been lived with. Gentle traces of their former life are part of their character and tell the rug’s story.
Do vintage rugs suit modern interiors?
Yes. Muted tones and a soft patina work well with Scandinavian, minimalist, rustic and modern rooms.
How do I care for a vintage rug?
Vacuum lightly, rotate it now and then and don’t brush the fringes hard. For a deep clean, choose a specialist for hand-knotted rugs.
